Trip Overview

Machu Picchu by Bus from Cusco is the most affordable option to visit the Lost City of the Incas from Cusco. The base camp for Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes, is located deep in the jungle. It is isolated and has no direct roads connecting it to other cities. There are two ways to reach Aguas Calientes from Cusco: by train or by hiking.

On this two-day tour to Machu Picchu by bus from Cusco, we will take you by car from Cusco to Hidroeléctrica, through the Sacred Valley of the Incas. From Hidroeléctrica, we will hike for three hours along the railway tracks to Machu Picchu Pueblo. This route offers stunning landscapes and follows the same path taken by the renowned American professor Hiram Bingham III when he rediscovered Machu Picchu.

If you’re traveling on a budget and wish to experience the best of your trip to Machu Picchu, this is the ideal option. Without splurging on a luxurious train journey, you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in the serenity of nature and meet locals who call these remote areas home.

By choosing this Machu Picchu by Bus tour from Cusco, you’ll not only save money but also contribute to the well-being of communities living in the region’s remote areas.

Travel Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Hidroeléctrica – Machu Picchu Pueblo

Between 6:00 and 7:00 am, we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and travel by minibus towards Hidroeléctrica. During the approximately 5-6 hour journey, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, crossing the Abra Málaga pass (3,256 m – 10,682 ft), ascending to 4,316 meters above sea level, from where you’ll have one of the most spectacular views of Peruvian geography.

After descending through the jungle, we’ll arrive in Santa María (1,250 m) and then Santa Teresa, where we’ll make a brief stop around 1:30 pm to regain energy at a local restaurant.

With renewed energy, we’ll begin an approximately 3-hour hike along the railway tracks to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes). There, you will stay in basic accommodation with a private bathroom. If you wish, you can relax in the hot springs of Aguas Calientes. In the evening, our guide will meet you at the hotel lobby to explain the itinerary for the next day. Dinner will be served at a local restaurant.

Day 2: Machu Picchu Pueblo – Machu Picchu – Hidroeléctrica – Cusco

We will wake up early for breakfast around 4:00 am. After breakfast, you’ll start the ascent to Machu Picchu. This hike, lasting approximately one and a half hours, follows a section of the Inca Trail to the citadel’s entrance. If you prefer to avoid the hike, you can opt for a 25-minute bus ride from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu at a cost of USD 12 each way.

Upon arrival at Machu Picchu’s entrance, our guide will assist you with the entry process. It’s important to have your original passport and entrance ticket ready. Once inside, you’ll enjoy a guided tour lasting about two and a half hours, visiting Machu Picchu’s main areas while learning about its history and architecture.

After the guided tour, you’ll have free time to explore. If you’ve reserved a hike to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, inform your guide so they can direct you accordingly. Alternatively, you can hike to Inti Punku (Sun Gate), a viewpoint offering spectacular views of Machu Picchu and the entry point for those completing the Inca Trail. This round-trip hike takes about two hours.

At the indicated time, you’ll return on foot to Aguas Calientes and continue to Hidroeléctrica. Our vehicle departs from Hidroeléctrica at 3:00 pm, arriving back in Cusco around 10:00 pm, dropping you off near the Plaza de Armas.
